Clinical study of the efficacy and safety with a probiotic mixture (omnibiotic migra) in patients with episodic migraine
Keywords:
gut-brain axis, microbiota, migraine, probiotics, treatmentAbstract
Introduction: There is evidence for a role of the gut microbiota in the pathophysiology of some neurological diseases – the socalled „gut-brain” axis. In migraine, the git brain axis has three main aspects – involvement in inflammation and the role of neuropeptides, association of migraine and gastrointestinal disorders, and evidence of an effect on probiotic supplements and diet in humans with migraine.
The aim is to evaluate the effect and tolerability of treatment with probiotic mixture (Omnibiotic Migra) as adjunctive therapy in patients with episodic migraine.
Patients and methods: A total of 30 patients with migraine were included – 24 women and 6 men. The patients were treated with probiotic – Omnibiotic Migra 1 sache per day, 60 days.
Results: Significant improvement was found in: pain intensity, number and duration of attacks, number of migraine days per month, post-attack symptoms (general fatigue, helplessness and drowsiness) and also in accompanying symptoms as anxiety.
Discussion: Dysbiosis may be associated with the pathogenesis of migraine. Our results show that probiotic supplements have a place in the combined treatment of migraine, and can affect the intensity, frequency and duration of attacks, as well as the accompanying symptoms, such as anxiety.
