Abstract

Cerebral palsy comprises a group of non-progressive residual symptoms with movement manifestations (paresis, muscle tone disturbances, coordination problems, posture changes and involuntary movements) due to non-development or brain damage in the prenatal, perinatal and postnatal periods. Symptomatic epilepsy, intellectual deficits, speech impairment, learning and cognitive impairment, including attention deficit and hyperkinetic or autistic spectrum disorders, are often present.
The differential diagnosis of the disease in children with motor disorders, combined with mental retardation and epilepsy is a challenge in pediatric practice. Many inherited metabolic, slowly progressive degenerative diseases and genetic syndromes have been initially diagnosed as cerebral palsy. Establishing an early diagnosis is extremely important for the subsequent motor and intellectual development of the child, because certain metabolic diseases have specific therapy and its early initiation leads to improvement of the neurological deficit and reduction of the lesions in the brain.
Unfortunately, some neurodegenerative diseases and genetic syndromes do not have therapy yet, but the proof of a genetic defect has an important role in preventing the birth of another affected child in the family using prenatal diagnosis.
The diagnosis of these diseases has been improved significantly in recent years thanks to the development of imaging studies - MRS, genetic testing and metabolic studies.
The paper presents the differential diagnosis of various forms of cerebral palsy.
