Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) or acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis is a rare immunomediated disease, with a common trigger viral or bacterial infection leading to extensive areas of inflammation and demyelination in the brain and / or spinal cord, with a predominant manifestation in childhood. It usually occurs as a single episode and has a favorable prognosis. In a small percentage of cases, children have a subsequent episodes and in this cases the disease should be differentiated from children’s MS. Multiphase ADEM should always be considered as a risk factor for future other demyelinating disease, especially in cases of anti-MOG positive and persistent antibodies.
